Banasura Hill Resort, Wayanad — rammed earth and fireflies

Rammed earth, 35 acres, and fireflies.

Banasura Hill Resort, Wayanad — rammed earth and fireflies

Where

Rammed earth rooms on 35 acres at around 3,500 feet, near Vellamunda. The hill is the first thing you see from reception — not a photo of it, the actual hill, clouds sitting on the peak.

The rooms are built from compacted raw soil, no concrete. It reads as a design statement until you're inside running a hand along the wall — grainy, warm, slightly rough. It doesn't feel like a hotel room, which is the point.

WiFi works across the property. Cell signal doesn't — patchy at best, gone at worst. The isolation is what you're paying for, so plan around it rather than fighting it. The buffet is ₹750 plus GST and it's fine. Decent, not remarkable. You're not here for the food.

Two things to ask about at check-in, because neither is signposted. There's a guided nature walk we missed and wished we hadn't — we did the trail unguided on our last morning and it gives you the hill from inside the grounds, close and fully framed, without a jeep or a crowd. And there's a waterfall on the property you can hear from some rooms but never see: twenty to twenty-five minutes on a muddy trail, leeches permissible.

At night there are fireflies between the trees. Not one or two — a proper silent light show. On the morning trail we watched a giant Malabar squirrel work its way through the canopy, the vivid red one that looks cartoonishly oversized until you realise that's just the animal.

Practical: it's roughly four to four and a half hours from Bangalore without stops, and Banasura Sagar Dam is fifteen minutes away — go on your first morning, because it shuts by 5:30 and it will otherwise stay on your list until you leave. We tried three times across four days and never made it.

The full trip — the Kabini corridor drive, Kurumbala Kota Mala, the tomb at Mananthavady, and what we didn't get to — is in the Wayanad post.
